Located in Charleston, South Carolina, Elms Digestive Disease Specialists is a team of gastroenterologists providing caring, comprehensive digestive care for the Lowcountry.

Our specially trained, compassionate doctors offer state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services for gastroenterological disorders and diseases and preventative care such as colonoscopy and endoscopy.

Diarrhea/IBS

Loose, watery, or frequent bowel movements that last more than two days can be caused by bacterial infections, viruses, food allergies, medications, and more.

Acid Reflux/Heartburn

A burning sensation from the stomach into the chest that gets worse after eating or lying down, or a sour, bitter taste, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or persistent cough.

Constipation

Infrequent or uncomfortable bowel movements can cause abdominal bloating and cramps, decreased appetite, lethargy, blood in the stool, and severe pain.

Abdominal Pain

Pain between the chest and groin can be caused by constipation, IBS, food allergies, a stomach virus, or bacteria. Severe acute pain in the lower right side of the abdomen, or pain that becomes worse with time should be assessed immediately.

Vomiting/Nausea

Persistent nausea and vomiting can be a symptom of an underlying health problem such as stomach ulcers, infections, celiac disease, and diabetic gastroparesis.

Hemorrhoids

A swelling of veins under the skin of the anus or lower rectum. Hemorrhoids cause itching, bleeding, or leakage of feces and may or may not be associated with pain.

Bloating or Cramping

Frequent bloating or cramping can be caused by gas, IBS, food intolerance, infections, or even small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

Rectal Bleeding

Blood in the stool can be caused by hemorrhoids, but more serious conditions include polyps, cancer, and colitis. So, blood in the stool should always be evaluated by a doctor.

Trouble Swallowing / Dysphagia

Pain, difficulty, or inability to swallow food or liquids, or having the sensation that something is stuck in your throat or chest.
